GT6 has seen some graphical improvements in terms of lighting and car details over it's predecessor GT5, while also introducing Adaptive Tessellation. For the less tech savvy, put simply Adaptive Tessellation is a technique that game developers use where by graphical detail is not lost when you zoom into an in game graphical element. It was once thought that Adaptive Tessellation could not be used with last generation hardware as said hardware simply did not have the firepower for such techniques to be viable; like the PS3 or Xbox 360 but GT6 game developer PolyPhony Digital somehow were able to incorporate these techniques into GT6. Despite PD's devotion to car models and their amazing details there are no doubt lots of graphical inconsistencies in the way of standard models and tracks/ track elements that have been carried over and touched up from previous GT games. None the less, evidently when PD go to town with a car model, they definitely have the gift.
FM5 is an XboxOne release game, and it looks fantastic no doubt, with beautiful car models and tracks that are a step up from what Forza 4 offered up but that is to be expected with fresh hardware vs 8 year old hardware that is the Xbox 360. It is debatable how much more compute an XboxOne has over the 360 and PS3, but one thing is for sure, 8GB of Ram vs 512MB for both PS3 and 360 is a substantial advantage. Depending on your source, XboxOne should be around 8 times more powerful than last generation consoles. Whatever the truth is, there is no question that an XboxOne is like a highly strung V8 vs an Eco 4 cylinder that is last Gen.
So that brings us to FM5 vs GT6 graphical comparison in Photomode. There is no question that track elements in FM5 are consistently superior to that of GT6, though how do car models in each games respective Photomode compare to each other? I personally thought that there would be no comparison, so never thought about it at all, as it never crossed my mind! It should be pretty obvious that FM5 car models should be leaps and bounds ahead of GT6. Of course GT6 has the advantage of being a game that is finely honed on its hardware; I mean GT6 has no doubt pushed the PS3 to it's limits, and some might say beyond. PD have had 7 years to perfect their techniques and get familiar with the aging PS3 hardware. FM5 on the other hand is an XboxOne launch title, and no doubt future offerings of FM further down the line will look much better as T10 developers familiarize themselves with the new tech and how to get the most out of it. Regardless of all of the above we can't forget the underlining fact that GT6 has its home on 7 year old tech while FM5 is current generation. A hell of allot can happen in the tech world in 7 years so should we really be comparing PS3 graphics with XboxOne? And the answer is no we should not, but judging by the comparison Photomode images presented to us, there is more than a viable reason to compare, as arguably GT6 car models, at least in Photomode look superior to that of FM5 equivalents. In my mind this should simply not be happening as I do not ever recall GT4 on PS2 ever being compared to FM3 on the 360 and with any hint of favor going to GT4. Such a comparison was simply a no go back then, there was no comparison to be made whatsoever, FM3 was categorically a better looking game than GT4. Of course, each generational jump in terms of graphical quality has been less pronounced as time goes on. PS1 vs PS2 was a big jump, PS2 to PS3 was also big but not as big as PS1 vs PS2. PS3 to PS4, again there is clearly a jump in graphical quality but the difference is the smallest it has ever been. And no doubt this trend will continue unless we see a graphical revolution anytime soon spurned by a new technique or some new fancy hardware that takes GPU compute to the next level at a price affordable to put in a box called a console.
So what is going on, why do GT6 car models look so good and how is it that they can be put on the same pedestal as FM5 let alone actually (though arguably) look better. Great developers and clever techniques? Untapped PS3 potential revealing itself before it dies? XboxOne developers T10 failing to get the most from their hardware or less of a focus on car models for an overall and more consistent graphical product? What ever the reasons are the fact that there is an actual comparison between the 2 game franchises is a precedent! The very real fact that FM5 ships on vastly superior hardware is a credit to the PS3 and the developers at Polyphony Digital.
This article is not suggesting for a second that GT6 graphics on PS3 are overall superior to that of FM5, to the contrary that argument is of course mute. Though what is clear though that in certain scenarios there is a very real basis for a comparison, and that scenario being Photomode equivalents for both games and even images captured from actual replays.
The PS4 has so far proven to punch a little harder than the XboxOne so it will be very interesting to see what PD can do with GT7 graphically. Personally though, and I think I speak for most of the community, we would all rather see a more consistent graphical representation for tracks and cars as well as a huge jump in how many cars are on track at any one time. PC Racing Sims have for a long time had more than 16 cars on track, so nothing short of 24 on track will be acceptable in my mind.
